Project Engineer – Environmental Health and Safety

Develops and conducts training and technical assistance activities for business and industry, particularly in the area of Environmental Health and Safety.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to adhering to the policies and procedures as specified by the Alabama Technology Network, the host college, and the Alabama Community College System, duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develops and implements technical assistance and training projects for business and industry in the area of environmental health and safety.
  • Delivers projects as assigned by Team Leader and/or Director. 
  • Prepares reports, statistical data, and general information for use in evaluating effectiveness of EH&S Team programs implemented for clients. 
  • Submits documentation and reports to Director or Corporate Office as needed.
  • Collaborates on projects/activities with other ATN staff throughout the state.
  • Collaborates on projects/activities with the Alabama Community College System.
  • Participates in all Team activities and on committees as requested.
  • Travel to assist with projects as needed throughout the state.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with prospective and existing clients.
  • Prepares all required documents for training, including but not limited to: sign-in sheets, handouts, manuals and evaluations. 
  • Works with clients to complete client satisfaction and impact surveys.
  • Participates in the formulation and implementation of  Team product line, operations, and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Promotes ATN within professional, civic, technical, and industrial organizations and other agencies.
  • Collaborates, cooperates, promotes, and communicates with employees of the host college. 
  • Utilizes Enterprise Planning Resources (ERP) system, NetSuite, to record time, expense, and other data in a timely manner.
  • Adheres to National Institute of Standards and Technology/Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NIST/MEP) guidelines and procedures. 
  • Maintains professional credentials and participates in meetings and conference of relevant professional organizations as required.  
  • Assists with Team efforts of business development, sales, and relationship development.
  • Travel to deliver and/or assist with Team projects as needed throughout the state, required. Occasional overnight travel required (approved travel reimbursed.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings and weekend hours.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance. 

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent technical area from an accredited institution.
  • At least five (5) years full-time environmental health and safety work experience in industry or manufacturing. 
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and ADEM regulations and health and safety training requirements.
  • Experience with project management and delivery of industry training.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with various software programs including Microsoft Office Suite and Office 365. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.

    NOTE: A minimum of eight (8) years full-time environmental health and safety work experience in industry or manufacturing may be accepted in lieu of degree. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification in CSP, PHST, CIH or CHMM.
  • Experience with safety and health audits, ergonomics, development of written safety and health programs and development of written safety and health training programs, and development of safety and health training programs.
  • Experience with one or more of ATN’s service delivery specialties (Quality Systems, Lean Enterprise, Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering/Technical Services, Industrial Maintenance Technology, or Leadership and Management Development).
  • Experience in business development, sales, marketing, or public relations. 
  • Experience with Quality Management Systems ISO9001, ISO14001, and/or ISO45001.

Supplemental Information

Salary: Compensation is in accordance with the Alabama Technology Network’s 2024-2025 Salary Schedule T-3 ($66,411 – $108,987).
